Understanding Mental Health

Diagnosis & Treatment

Mental health is an essential component of the overall health and well being of everyone, particularly children and adolescents. Essentially, it affects how we think, feel, and act. Mental health influences our ability to handle stress, relate to other people, and make decisions.

Children and adolescents struggling with mental health problems tend to experience disruption in daily life at home, at school and/or in the community. When children's mental health problems go untreated, their development, school performance and relationships can be affected. This can lead to school failure, substance abuse, violence, isolation, or even suicide. The state of their mental health affects how they view themselves and others, their judgment, and what choices they make and actions they take.

Below are descriptions of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders that commonly occur during childhood and adolescence. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and all can have a serious impact on a child's overall health.

  • Mood Disorders
  • Attention Deficit Disorders
  • Behavior Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorders

The good news is help is available.

The key to handling mental disorders of children is to recognize the problem and seek appropriate treatment. Knowing more about the symptoms of common mental health disorders and how they are diagnosed can help determine if you or a loved one is in need of help.
