Program Comparison

How Do Children and Adolescents Served by Kids Oneida Compare with Those Served by Other Types of Mental Health Programs in New York State?

NYS-OMH has contracted with John Lyons, Ph.D. (Northwestern University/Buddin Praed Foundation) to conduct a comprehensive study of 10 different mental health program types serving emotionally disturbed children and adolescents across New York State. As part of this large study, Dr. Lyons also reviewed 190 cases of children and adolescents served by Kids Oneida from 08/98 to 08/01.

The following items are selected findings from Dr. Lyons recent (August 2001) study of the Kids Oneida population:

  • Children and adolescents in Kids Oneida have significantly higher levels of risk behaviors (e.g. danger to self, danger to others, delinquency, etc.) than those served by the Home and Community-Based Waiver (Waiver) program or Intensive Case Management (ICM) program.
  • Children and adolescents in Kids Oneida have the same levels of risk as children and adolescents admitted to Residential Treatment Facilities (RTF) in New York State.
  • Children and adolescents in Kids Oneida have more juvenile justice involvement than any of the other 10 program types reviewed.
  • Children and adolescents in Kids Oneida have significantly fewer strengths than children and adolescents served by the Waiver or ICM programs.
  • Children and adolescents in Kids Oneida had the highest rate of school and family functioning problems of all 10 program types reviewed.
  • Children and adolescents in Kids Oneida are at least as challenging and in some ways more challenging than other intensive community-based service programs in New York State (i.e. Waiver, ICM).
