Kids Oneida kids show creativity through photography
Through the eyes of different individuals, the same moment can be viewed in countless ways. The perspective through which a photograph is taken is like a window into the artist’s mind and soul. It can explain their view of the world around them, their mood, experience, thought process, maturity, etc.
Kids Oneida has begun assisting children in exploring their talents, whether realized or hidden, through their participation in a photography group. This group is open to all Kids Oneida clients as well as to their siblings.
During the course of this particular project, youth were given lessons on the history of photography as well as background information on camera mechanics and technology. Participants were encouraged to use the lens of their camera to capture their unique perspective of the world around them. The group explored different locations throughout Utica and Remsen, where the children we work with transformed from clients participating in a group to artists capturing their perspective. Group participants were able to confine harmony, balance, and contrast into their photographs.

A portion of the work created during this photography group has been selected by group members and lesson instructors to be displayed. It will be incorporated in Kids Oneida’s 1st annual Positive Space Art Gala and Auction. Positive Space will be held at SUNY IT in March of 2012. Youth will be recognized for their talents, hard work, and ability to share with others their uniquely beautiful perspective of our area and of fall foliage.
